The Doge meme traces back to a 2010 photograph of a rescue Shiba Inu named Kabosu, shared by her owner on a personal blog. The image, featuring Kabosu’s hilarious side-glance, wasn’t meme-famous until about 2013, when internet users began overlaying it with colorful Comic Sans captions like “such wow”, “much amaze”, and “very noble” to mimic a humorous inner monologue in broken English . The term “Doge” itself is a playful misspelling of “dog,” originally seen in a 2005 Homestar Runner webcomic .

By late 2013, Doge had become one of the internet’s most beloved memes—so much so that Know Your Meme labeled it the top meme of 2013. The meme’s simplicity, combined with its fun, quirky tone, made it easily adaptable. Over the years, fans spawned related sub-genres like “Ironic Doge,” “Swole Doge vs. Cheems,” and more, expanding the meme into a full culture .

Doge’s influence reached beyond memes—it inspired the creation of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency launched in December 2013 as a lighthearted, community-driven alternative to traditional digital currencies . Moreover, Kabosu attained iconic status: named one of TIME’s 100 most influential animals, featured in a meme-of-the-decade nod, and even memorialized with a bronze statue. Her passing at age 18 in 2024 stirred heartfelt tributes across the internet, reflecting the lasting joy Doge brought to people globally.
